Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To obtain a high-strength biodegradable fiber having such structure as to combine c-axis-oriented crystal with another kind of crystal differing in orientation mode from the former. CONSTITUTION:This biodegradable fiber is obtained from a thermoplastic resin consisting of either homopolymer or copolymer of a hydroxyalkanoate, having crystal with its c-axis oriented parallel with the fiber axis and another kind of crystal differing in orientation mode from the former, and it is characterized that the amount of the latter crystal is greater than that of the former. This fiber is produced by the following processes: the aforementioned thermoplastic resin is subjected to melt extrusion at 100-250 deg.C using an extruder and then spun to crystallized solidification in a water cooling bath at 20-80 deg.C, and the resultant fiber is preheated at 10-200 deg.C followed by drawing at 40-130 deg.C and then heat treatment at 60-150 deg.C.
