Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium excellent in sliding durability which can withstand operation under severer sliding conditions sufficiently. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic recording medium comprises a magnetic layer formed on a substrate and a protective layer formed thereon by sputtering. The protective layer comprises an amorphous layer principally comprising carbon having a specific Knoop hardness and resiliency (ratio of Knoop hardness/Young's modulus). The protective layer is formed by sputtering a carbon target while applying such a bias potential that the potential of the substrate becomes lower than the plasma potential in the presence of hydrogen gas.
