Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To obtain a smectic liquid crystal composition capable of inducing the change in its layer structure even without application of any intense external force, thus useful for e.g. recording elements, by incorporating e.g. a cyanoalkylbiphenyl compound with an optically active methyladipic diester compound having code structures at both ends. CONSTITUTION:This smectic liquid crystal composition is obtained by incorporating (A) a 4-cyano-4'-alkylbiphenyl compound or 4-cyano-4'-alkoxybiphenyl compound each presenting smectic liquid crystal (alkyl and alkoxyl each is pref. of 8-18C) with (B) pref. 0.5-10wt.% of an optically active 3-methyladipic diester compound having core structures at both ends of the formula {A is R-X-Y-Z [R is cyano, a 1-18C alkyl, alkoxyl, alkanoyl, etc.; X is phenylene, naphthylene, biphenylene, pyrimidylene, cyclohexylene etc.; Y is COO, OCO, O, COS or single bond; Z is single bond, (substituted) phenylene, cyclohexylene, a phenylenealkyl, etc.]}.
