Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To recognize the direction to an obstruction from a vehicle by a direction detecting signal while such a state that the distance between a first light receiving section and the obstruction becomes equal to the distance between a second light receiving section and the obstruction is maintained by rotating a light emitting/receiving section by means of a control section. CONSTITUTION:When an obstruction exists in the overlapping part of the detectable extents of light receiving sections 12L and 12R, distance detecting sections 16L and 16R respectively generate distance detecting signals LL and LR corresponding to the distances to the obstruction based on effective light beam detecting signals SL and SR obtained from the sections 12L and 12R. A comparing section 18 compares the signals LL and LR with each other and outputs a compared output signal SD representing the distance difference DELTAL. A control section 17 rotates a light emitting/receiving section 13 so that the distances from the light receiving sections 12L and 12R to the obstruction can become equal to each other by controlling a rotation driving section 14 based on the signal SD. Then, the control section 17 forms and outputs a direction detecting signal D indicating the direction to the obstruction based on an angle detecting signal SA from a rotational angle detecting section 15.
