Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To quickly raise the temperature of an exhaust gas purifying catalyst to enhance exhaust gas characteristic on engine starting by controlling supply of the secondary air and the path section area of an exhaust passage based on at least one of engine operating condition and catalyst temperature parameters. CONSTITUTION:A heater-incorporated catalyst EHC, a ternary catalyst 12, and a silencer 13 incorporating a switching valve for increasing/decreasing a path section area of an exhaust passage 8 are arranged in this order in the exhaust passage 8 of an engine. An air pump 10 is connected to the position upstream from the EHC 11 of the exhaust passage 8. The switching valve inside the silencer 13 is controlled according to an opening calculated from engine revolution number NE and suction pipe absolute pressure PBA. When catalyst temperature and engine water temperature are at specified temperature or less and a secondary air supply condition is formed within a specified period after engine starting, a valve opening is corrected in a valve opening direction based on the correction amount calculated according to the catalyst temperature, and the secondary air is supplied to the catalysts 11, 12.
