Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To obtain a sizing agent for paper composed of a copolymer of an alkyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride and capable of improving the rigidity of paper. CONSTITUTION:This paper-sizing agent can be produced by copolymerizing l I 1mol of maleic anhydride and >=1mol of an alkyl vinyl ether of formula CH2=CHOR (R is a 1-4C alkyl) in the presence of a free radical catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide to form a copolymer having a weight-average molecular weight of 50,000-2,000,000, preferably 100,000-1,000,000 and adding a polyvinyl alcohol to an aqueous solution of the copolymer. Coated paper is produced by applying the coating liquid obtained by the above process to base paper and pressing the coated paper with an iron after drying.
