Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To obtain a new cyclohexanedione derivative excellent in herbicidal activity on paddy weeds and upland field weeds, free from chemical injury on useful crops and non-toxic to mammals and fishes. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I [R and R are H, an alkyl; R is CH2OR , CH2CH2OCH2CH2OR or CH2CH(OR )2 (R to R are an alkyl and R may be an aljylene constituting a ring structure); R is an alkyl; X is a halogen], e.g. 2-{2'-chloro-4'-ethylsulfonyl-3'-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethoxy]benzoyl}--1,3-cyclohexanedione. This compound can be obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with a benzoyl halide derivative of formula III to synthesize an intermediate of formula TV and then reacting it in the presence of a cyanide source as a catalyst. A herbicide containing this compound can almost entirely control various kinds of weeds becoming a problem in water treatment in a paddy field or foliage treatment and soil treatment in an upland field.
