Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To reduce damage of a magnetic tape by bringing a magnetic surface of the tape into contact with a magnetic head only. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic head 12 is mounted on an inner circumferential surface of a cylindrical shaped rotary drum 16 with the magnetic tape of which sliding surface is made to face inward, and a supply reel 1 and a take-up reel 2 for the magnetic tape are installed inside the rotary drum 16. The magnetic tape is traveled along a magnetic tape guide 14. At the time of recording and reproducing, the tape guide 14 is moved into a position where the magnetic tape is not in contact with the rotary drum 16 but i in contact with the magnetic head 12 by driving a motor to make the magnetic tape approach the rotary drum 16.
