Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To reduce the number of basic segments for a handwritten and inputted character string. CONSTITUTION:The handwritten character string inputted in a coordinate input means 11 is coded in a stroke coding means 12 corresponding to the features for respective strokes constituting a character. Also, the input character string is divided into the plural basic segments in a basic segment dividing means 13. Three continuous isolated segments generated by the division are connected in a three continuous isolated segment connection part 21 and two continuous isolated segments are connected in a two continuous isolated segment connection part 22. As the result, the number of the basic segments is reduced. For the output of the two continuous isolated segment connection part 22, an isolated segment connection means 30 connects a single isolated segment to an adjacent basic segment further and reduces the number of the basic segments.
