OPTICAL TRANSMISSION AND RECEPTION MODULE

PURPOSE:To provide the small-sized optical transmission and reception module which has high fiber surface density. CONSTITUTION:An integrated circuit 600 and an optical element 608 are electrically coupled with wires in a wiring board 203 by using leads 602 for tape bonding, connection pins 204 are connected to the wires in the board on a flank of the board, and signals are led out in the same direction with a ribbon 102 of fibers. This module is used while inserted into a connector (not illustrated) provided on the top surface of a mount board (not illustrated) at right angles to the surface of the mount board. The optical transmission and reception module is reducible in thickness and the connection pins are formed on the flank of the module, so the optical fibers and mount board can be mounted vertically in contact. Consequently, the optical fibers can be arrayed in two dimensions at a short pitch and the signal line surface density is improved.
