Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To obtain a fibrous adsorbent having high specific surface area and chelating ability by heat treating a carbon fiber obtained from an aromatic sulfonic acid condensation product or its salt as a raw material in the presence of oxygen. CONSTITUTION:The fibrous adsorbent having 7-25wt.% oxygen content, 7001600m /g specific surface area and 0.05-0.25mmol/g chelating ability is obtained by heat treating the carbon fiber at 300-600 deg.C under the presence of oxygen. Where, the carbon fiber is obtained by spinning a raw material, into which the condensation product of the aromatic sulfonic acid or its salt or further a water soluble high polymer therewith is added, and heating in an inert atmosphere.
