Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE: To provide a method and a device which can keep a temperature of an exhaust gas sensor at a fixed temperature in a narrow scope without generating a fluctuation of an air-fuel ratio signal and can compensate the effect of unexpected external disturbance to control the temperature of the exhaust gas sensor. CONSTITUTION: Internal resistance of an exhaust gas sensor or a heating device 8 is measured to detect a temperature of the exhaust gas sensor 3. The measured internal resistance is controlled a closed loop to a predetermined target value by continuous operation control. A target value Risoll of temperature of the exhaust gas sensor 3 is set in such a manner that it corresponds to a temperature value of the exhaust gas sensor 3 in a predetermined operation condition of an internal combustion engine in a high load condition in which heated electric power is not supplied. Consequently, it is possible to heat the cold exhaust gas sensor rapidly without heating the exhaust gas sensor excessively when exhaust gas is at a high temperature.
