NUCLEAR REACTOR WHEREIN PASSIVE CONTACT AMMONIA CONVERTER IS PROVIDED

PURPOSE: To convert any undesirable volatile N containing chemical species existing in a nuclear reactor into a non-volatile chemical species. CONSTITUTION: A passive catalytic ammonia converter 48 making action in water-steam mixture flowing out of the reactor core 20 of a boiling water nuclear reactor is provided. The catalytic ammonia converter 48 includes such catalytic substance as so arranged so substantially the entire water-steam mixture flowing in a steam separator 32 flows along the surface of the catalytic substance. On the surface of the catalytic substance ammonia or NO reacts with O2 or H2 O2 in the water-steam mixture to produce nitrite ions or nitrates. The ammonia converter 48 is so constituted as a pressure drop in nuclear reactor cooling water between the front position and the rear position becomes extremely small.
