Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To impart a synthetic fiber, etc., with water-absorbing performance having remarkably improved resistance to washing by graft-polymerizing a vinyl monomer containing acidic group to a synthetic fiber, etc., treating the product with an alkali and irradiating with ultraviolet rays having specific wavelength. CONSTITUTION:A vinyl monomer having an acidic group [preferably (meth) acrylic acid, etc.] is graft-polymerized to a synthetic fiber, etc. The polymerized product is immersed in a liquid containing an alkaline agent such as sodium carbonate and sodium acetate and irradiated with ultraviolet rays of the c-wave region to effect the hydrophilization of the fiber surface and obtain a synthetic fiber having excellent washing resistance and water absorption properties.
