Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To obtain a new compound having excellent retrovirus protease inhibiting action and useful as an anti-human immunodeficiency virus agent, etc. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (R is hydroxymethyl and R is OH, or R is hydroxymethyl or formyl and R is H), e.g. the compound of formula II having the following properties. Color and form, light yellow powder; melting point, slowly decomposing at 180 deg.C without exhibiting a definite melting point; molecular formula, C23H30O5; color reactions, positive to Gibbs reaction and 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine reagent; solubility, soluble in methanol, acetone, etc., and insoluble in water and n-hexane; classification by basic, neutral and acidic, acidic. This compound can be prepared by culturing a microorganism belonging to the genus Stachybotrys and capable of producing the compound of formula I [e.g. Stachybotrys sp. Mer-NF5O03 (FERM P-12344)] preferably under aerobic condition at 28 deg.C for usually 2-10 days and separating and purifying the compound from the cultured product.
