Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To improve freedom of arrangement of various passages in a variable intake device for an internal combustion engine by reducing size of an intake pipe. CONSTITUTION:Branch pipes 13 and 14 cross each other, which pipes 13, 14 are communicated with each cylinder of bilateral banks opposed in V-character form. Surge tanks 15, 16 each having a specified volume are arranged on the upper side of the branch pipes 13, 14. The branch pipes 13, 14 are respectively connected to the surge tanks 15, 16 under a state that they have sections of a J-character form. Branch short-circuit passages 23, 24 are opened to a partition wall 17 therebetween, which passages 23, 24 are arranged on the way of the branch pipes 13, 14 for the short-circuit to the surge tanks 15, 16. Branch control valves 21, 22 are provided for opening and closing the branch communication passages 23, 24 according to an operation condition.
