Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To form a magnetic layer having satisfactory dispersibility and durability and to obtain a magnetic recording medium having satisfactory running durability by regulating the concn. of urethane groups in polyester polyurethane resin to >=2.5mmol/g. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium consists of a nonmagnetic substrate 1 and a magnetic layer 2 based on magnetic powder and a binder and formed on the substrate 1. Polyester polyurethane resin or polycarbonate polyurethane resin and polyvinyl acetal resin are used as the binder. The concn. of urethane groups in the polyester polyurethane resin or polycarbonate polyurethane resin is regulated to >=2.5mmol/g. The percentage of the polyester polyurethane resin or polycarbonate polyurethane resin in the binder is regulated to 20-80wt.% and that of the polyvinyl acetal resin to 80-20wt.%. The compatibility of the resins is improved, the magnetic powder is satisfactorily dispersed in the magnetic layer and the magnetic layer has moderate hardness and can enhance running durability.
