Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To produce a high-quality 4-carboxybiphenyl in a high yield at a cost by using an economical molecular oxygen-containing gas ready to handle as an oxidizing agent. CONSTITUTION:In this method for producing 4-carboxybiphenyl by oxidizing 4-ethylbiphenyl using a molecular oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst composed of a cobalt compound, a manganese compound and a bromine compound in an acetic acid solvent, the cobalt compound and the manganese compound are characteristically used respectively in an amount of 0.01 to 0.2wt.%, based on acetic acid, in terms of the amount of metal cobalt base and 0.3 to 2.0 times the weight of the cobalt compound in terms of the amount of metal manganese base.
