ICEBREAKER

PURPOSE: To provide an icebreaking ship which has a simple structure and does not prevent current at sea. CONSTITUTION: The edges of the underside of a bow constitution an icebreaking means in a draft line zone. The width of the underside of the bow is designed wider than the width of the afterbody of the hull in the draft line zone. Both sides of the hull are provided with balcony-like flanks with balcony side surfaces 1, 1' being substantially vertical, lower surfaces 2, 2' extending obliquely downward and a base 3 being substantially vertical with respect to a bottom. The balcony-like flanks extends substantially in parallel with a longitudinal axis through an entire length R of the hull. The width of the underside of the bow has a size which substantially corresponds to the distance between the bases of the balcony on both sides of the hull at a position where the underside begins extending from the bottom 4, and gradually increases as the underside progresses forward from the position where the extension begins. The distance between the flanks, in the draft line zone, is made larger than the width of the underside of the bow.
