Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To improve the sealing performance of a gland packing of a shaft seal device to thereby enable a troubleless stable operation. CONSTITUTION:A proper pressure is applied to the surface of a gland packing 10 by using a protective ring 13 which has a spring installed therein and is placed in a gland box and the pressure of a sealing liq. is kept lower than or about the same as that of the inside of a vacuum reactor by evacuating through a sealing-liq. injection nozzle 6 which is connected to an evacuation system. Thus, the leak of the sealing liq. into the reactor is prevented and a satisfactory working of the ring 13 is obtd. Simultaneously, lubrication of the packing 10 all the time by the liq. becomes possible and troubles, such as seizure of a stirrer shaft or intrusion of a foreign matter, e.g. a degraded polymer or a carbonization product into the reactor, are avoided.
