Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To efficiently produce a chromancarboxylic acid derivative useful as an intermediate for producing hydrazine-based derivatives having high insecticidal activity. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by formula I [R is 1-2C alkyl or halogen; R is 4-6C tertiary alkyl; R to R are H or methyl), e.g. 8-t-butyl-5- methylchroman-6-carboxylic acid reacts with a Lewis acid (preferably aluminum chloride) in an organic solvent, preferably an aromatic hydrocarbon at a temperature of 0 deg.C to the boiling point of the solvent, preferably 0-25 deg.C to afford the compound expressed by formula II, e.g. 5-methylchroman-6-carboxylic acid. The amount of the Lewis acid used is within the range of usually 1.0-3.0 equiv., preferably 1.0-1.5 equiv.
