PURPOSE:To allow the device to selectively takeout only required information by providing the character information recorded on a recording medium additionally with specific character information representative of the period of character information to subdivide the character information thereby making the relevant information, as well as the melody, recordable. CONSTITUTION:A signal to be recorded is fed from an input terminal 1 through an A/D converter 2 to an ATRAC processor 3 where the digital signal is compressed. The compressed signal is then interleaved through a signal processor 4 and added with an error correction code. It is then subjected to time control through a memory circuit 6 and recorded through an RF recording amplifier 5 while taking account of the subcode information, e.g. address information to be recorded, produced by a control circuit 18. When a text data is recorded, a specific code representative of a period of the data is recorded thus subdividing the text data. When any one of eight codes, i.e., '5Bh'-'5Dh' and '7Bh'-'7Fh' of ASCII code, not used in MD system for sector 01Hm for example, is used as the additional code, eight types of text can be recorded.
