METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MANUFACTURING ROLLED PAPER FOR SMOKING ARTICLE WOUND WITH BAND

PURPOSE: To provide a method for applying cellulosic slurry to banded smoking article wrappers with repetitive patterns. CONSTITUTION: Utilizing a screen roller 60 having a surface 51 including alternating regions of a screen section 64 separated by a spacer 66, cellulosic slurry is applied onto a pulp web 21 moving along a path to form repetitive patterns. Utilizing a slurry coater 46 including a slurry feeder 47, a knife 48 and a slurry return 49, a continuous thin layer of the slurry is applied to the surface 51 of the screen roller 60, and the slurry is allowed to adhere to only the screen section 64 by the vacuum force provide by a vacuum port 54. The roller 60 is rotated so that the adhered slurry moves to a region 51B adjacent to both the web 21 and a pressure port 52, and then the pressure port 52 forces the internal surface of the screen section 64 to release the slurry from the screen section 64, applies the released slurry to the web 21 and forms the repetitive patterns. The preferable widths of the screen section and the spacer range are 2-8 mm and 12-20 mm, respectively.
