Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To shorten the staying time of a bathometer in a furnace and to execute high accurate measurement by making the shifting velocity of the bathometer in the important part for control in the furnace low and in the other part high, at the time of measuring a piling shape of charged material in the furnace with the bathometer. CONSTITUTION:A lance 1 is inserted from the furnace wall and shifted at about 60m/min and decelerated so that the velocity becomes zero at the time of reaching near the furnace center. Successively, the lance 1 is shifted from the furnace center to the furnace wall at about 30m/min. For example, at the time of shifting the lance 1 to the position about 3/4 distant in the radial direction, the velocity of the lance 1 is reduced to about 10m/min on the furnace wall part being important for controlling the profile, and when the lance 1 reaches near the furnace wall, this velocity is reduced so as to become zero at the furnace wall. By this method, the important part for controlling the profile can be measured with high accuracy and the staying time of the lance 1 in the furnace is shortened.
