Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To prevent the steam explosion attributed to the mixture of the cooling water in the scarfing slag to be collected in the recess on the rear end surface of the slab in the scarfing operation. CONSTITUTION:The driving speed of a roller table 12 where the slab W is carried is detected by a pulse oscillator 9, and the detected value is received by a preset counter 10 where the pulse number is preset and the rear end of the slab W is detected, and an opening/closing valve 8a to feed the air to an air purge nozzle 7 which is arranged between a scarfing unit 1 and a water ejecting nozzle 3a and ejects the air toward the rear end of the slab W is opened. Thus, even when the scarfing slag is collected on the recess on the rear end surface of the slab W, the scarfing slag is blown off by the power of the air jet, preventing the generation of the steam explosion attributed to the mixture of water in the scarfing slag.
