Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To provide a high strength, easily graphitizable carbon material excellent in strength, thermal impact resistance and smoothness and free from troubles such as the falling of carbon from its surface, and to provide the method for producing the same. CONSTITUTION:The carbon material is obtained by simultaneously subjecting a thermosetting resin baked at a low temperature of 800-1700 deg.C to both a pressing treatment and a heating treatment in the presence of a graphitization catalyst. The easily graphitizable carbon material is graphitized by a beat treatment at 3300K under the ordinary pressure. The carbon material has a flexural strength of >=1600Kgf/cm , a net specific gravity of 1.65-2.05, a gas permeation degree of substantially zero, and a homogeneous microstructure.
