Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To provide an apparatus for the determination of the number of live microbial cells, usable over a wide field, having high accuracy, producible at a low cost and capable of getting the determination result only within several hours. CONSTITUTION:The objective apparatus for the determination of the number of live microbial cells is composed of an automatic diluting and stirring apparatus for diluting a specimen containing the objective microbial cells with a selective liquid medium in plural dilution stages and stirring the diluted solutions, an automatic fluorescent measuring apparatus to irradiate the microbial cells in the diluted specimen with excitation light having a peak wavelength of 366nm and determine the intensity of fluorescent light of 430-490nm wavelength emitted from the microbial cells, an external memory apparatus storing a data base on a preparatorily determined fluorescent intensity for known species of microorganisms and the number of live microbial cells and a processor to retrieve and refer the data base of the external memory apparatus based on the detected value obtained by the automatic fluorescent measuring apparatus and process the obtained data and, at the same time, control the automatic diluting and stirring apparatus and the automatic fluorescent measuring apparatus.
