Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To obtain a method for purifying 1,4-butandiol in which the high-purity 1,4-butandiol can stably be produced for a long period. CONSTITUTION:This method for purifying 1,4-butandiol comprises (1) feeding a hydrolytic reactional product to the first distillation column, distilling away the substantially total amount of water and acetic acid from the column top and feeding the bottom product to the second distillation column, (2) distilling away acetoxybutane and hydroxyacetoxybutane from the column top and or the upper side stream of the second distillation column, circulating the resultant distillate to the hydrolytic reactional zone and, on the other hand, taking out crude 1,4-butandiol as a vapor phase from the lower side stream; (3) feeding the crude 1,4-butandiol and hydrogen gas to a hydrogenating reactional zone filled with a hydrogenating catalyst and (4) feeding the hydrogenating reactional product to the third distillation column and taking out the 1,4-butandiol from the side stream or the column bottom.
