Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To reduce the size of housing structure and simplify it by sharing a photodetecting element for detecting environmental illuminance with a liquid crystal display device for visually displaying information on a message, etc. CONSTITUTION:In addition to a back light structure part, the photodetecting element 25 is confronted with the part which is a light guide means and one side surface of a diffusion plate 23 and does not face a lighting element 26. Therefore, this, photodetecting element 25 can detect external light which is made incident on the information display surface of a liquid crystal display unit 21, transmitted through it to the back surface side, and then propagated through the light guide means and diffusion plate 23. Namely, it is evident from the back light structure that light can be propagated reversely since the irradiating light from the back surface side of the liquid crystal display unit 21 is passed through the information display surface side. Thus, the lighting device and photodetecting element are supplied as an integrated component, so isolated chambers dedicated to the both are not necessary.
