Zusammenfassung: | PURPOSE:To provide the optical intensity modulator which sufficiently decreases return light by the simple method without specifically preparing an optical isolator. CONSTITUTION:The modulator consists of two sheets of parallel disposed quarter-wave plates 22, 24, the optical axes of the crystals of which are inclined at 45 deg. with a vertical direction, a straight polarizer 26, the transmission axis of which is parallel with the vertical direction and an optical waveguide 20. This optical waveguide consists of a metallic electrode, a p-doped GaAs substrate, a GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice layer and an n-doped GaAs layer. The modulator is driven by an electric signal having a suitable bias voltage from the outside and modulates the intensity of the light from a semiconductor laser polarized to the vertical direction. The modulator has a lens for coupling and the light emitted from the modulator is made incident on an optical fiber. |
