METHOD AND DEVICE FOR WORKING OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:To improve the mass productivity in a tip rounding for working an optical fiber for an optical communication system or the like by disposing a number of fiber materials along the same circle, rotating each of them, and processing forward end parts of the fiber materials to be rounded by a single moulding grinding wheel simultaneously. CONSTITUTION:A means to hold and rotate a fiber material 1 is formed by forming a circular gap 25 between an inner circumferential wall surface of an outer cylinder rotary body 16 and an outer circumferential wall surface of an inner rotary body 18. A resilient hollow member 21 is disposed at this gap 25. A number of the fiber materials 1 are then disposed along the same circle in the gap 25, compression air is introduced into a hollow 22 of the resilient hollow part 21 to expand, and the fiber materials 1 are fixed. Insertion forward ends 1a of the fiber materials 1 are applied to a circular grinding wheel surface 13 for forming of a single forming grinding wheel 12. In this condition, the inner rotary body 18 and the outer cylinder rotary body 16 are rotated in reverse directions to each other to rotate the fiber materials, and their forward end surfaces are rounded by rotation of the forming grinding wheel 12.
