A process for the preparation of chloro-o-nitroanilines of the formula (1) see diagramm : EP0173202,P5,F1 in which R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms or chlorine atoms, by reaction of chloronitrobenzenes of the formula (2) see diagramm : EP0173202,P5,F2 in which R1 and R2 have the meanings given above, with ammonia at an elevated temperature, which comprises effecting the reaction at temperatures from about 120 to 200 degrees C with anhydrous ammonia in the presence of aromatic hydrocarbons of the formula (3) see diagramm : EP0173202,P5,F3 in which R3 is a C1 -C4 -alkyl group and R4 and R5 are hydrogen atoms or C1 -C4 -alkyl groups.
