Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To adjust a sheet thickness correctly regardless of the width of a sheet by identifying the length of a sheet in response to the detection of a sheet by either one or both of sheet width detection sensors and adjusting a space between a printing head and a platen with the correction of a sheet thickness. CONSTITUTION:Protrusions 5, 6 are allowed to project slightly downward from the tip of each printing head 1 to 3 when a sheet 9 is held by driving a carrier frame 4 downward and driving a platen 8 upward, so that the printing heads 1 to 3 do not come in contact with the sheet 9. In addition, the presence of the sheet 9 is detected at one protrusion 6 using a sheet width detection sensor 10. On the other hand, the sheet 9 of any width is fed by moving it to the other protrusion 5 side. Subsequently, if the sheet width detection sensor 10 detects the sheet 9, the sheet 9 straddles extensively over the protrusions 5, 6 width-wise, and if the sheet 9 is not detected, the sheet 9 so narrow as not to reach the protrusion 6.
