PURPOSE:To provide a paper feeding device which can preliminarily prevent the breakage and obstruction of an elevating mechanism of a paper feeding table when abnormalities are found in the elevating mechanism. CONSTITUTION:In a paper feeding device to elevate/move a paper feeding table by using a wire rope 2, a tension detecting means to detect the changes in the tension of the wire rope 2 and an abnormal tension detecting means to detect that the output of the tension detecting means exceeds the preset range are provided, and winding/unwinding of the wire rope 2 is controlled by the output of the abnormal tension detecting means, and more concretely, a strain gauge 21a is mounted on an expandable part of the wire rope 2 in a direct or indirect manner. A lever which pivotably supports one end side in a swayable manner and also pivotably supports the roller to fold the midway of the wire rope 2 expanded by the energized spring and forms the other end side to the shape of a curved surface cam, and a switch to execute switching-on/off through contact with the curved surface cam.
