Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To provide a new neuraminidase useful for obtaining a sialic acid- bound compound through specifically degrading and eliminating the alpha2-8 bond among polysialic acid bonds. CONSTITUTION:The objective neuraminidase having the following characteristics: (1) to be produced by Bacteroides fragilis; (2) molecular weight: ca.165000 (determined by gel filtration method) or 55000 (determined by SDS-PAGE method); (3) optimal pH value: ca.7; (4) having an N-terminated amino acid sequence of the formula (X is unidentified); and (5) giving high substrate specificity to the alpha2-8 bond. This neuraminidase can be obtained by culture of neuraminidase- productive bacteria, Bacteroides fragilis, under aerobic conditions.
