Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE: To provide an operating method for use of a semiconductor laser which is provided with a branched cavity layer as an optical switch and a memory. CONSTITUTION: In an operating method for a semiconductor laser having a cavity layer 14, monolithically integrated on a substrate 2 and extended being flush with the base front of the substrate and, including plural separated controllable regions 8, 9, 10 and 11, charged carrier density is changed in at least one region, so that the semiconductor laser can radiate a light of 1st or 2nd wavelength corresponding to that change.
