Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE: To reduce the number of requests to the picture buffer and the compression releasing ability of a display device which displays a plurality of windows on its display screen. CONSTITUTION: Picture data streams from data sources A, B, and C to be displayed respectively in windows 24-A, 24-B, and 24-C are divided into coding interval sections CI. Then the coding interval sections CI are compressed by means of a compressor 8 and mixed together through a filter 12 and mixer 16. In the filter 12, only one of compressed coding interval sections to be displayed in an overlapping window section is stored in an only one of compression queues 14-A, 14-B, or 14-C. The mixed compressed data are released from compression by means of a compression releasing device 18 and generate the picture elements to be displayed finally in each window on a display screen 22.
