Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To obtain a new compound useful as a preventive and a therapeutic agent for preventing pulmonary emphysema, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc., having human leukocyte elastase inhibiting activity. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I [R is (esterified) carboxy; R and R are H or lower alkyl; R is lower alkyl] such as 3(RS)-[[2(R)-[4(ethoxycarbonyl)phenylaminocarbonyl]-3- methylpropylamino]carbonyl-L-prolyl]amino-1,1,1-trifluoro-2-oxo-4-meth ylpentane. The compound of formula I is obtained by oxidizing a compound of formula II with an oxidizing agent such as potassium permanganate in a solvent such as water or acetone.
