PURPOSE:To retard a deterioration in the electrode capacity and to increase the cycle performance by adding polysaccharide or its derivative to the inside of a sintered nickel substrate in which a cadmium active material is filled. CONSTITUTION:Polysaccharide or its derivative is added to the inside of a sintered nickel substrate in which a cadmium active material is filled. The nuber of neclei for depositing cadmium hydroxide on metallic cadmium in charging is retarded, and the conversion of deposited cadmium hydroxide particles into their fine particles can be prevented. The generation and accumulation of metallic cadmium by which discharge in made difficult by covering the surface of the metallic cadmium with a large number of fine cadmium hydroxide particles and by disturbing the contact of the metallic cadmium with an electrolyte are retarded and the cycle performance is increased.
