Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To provide the surface hardening method for a base material consisting of titanium or titanium alloy and the surface hardened member. CONSTITUTION:A coating layer of nickel or nickel alloy or titanium alloy contg. ceramics is formed on the base material consisting of the titanium or titanium alloy and is heated to effect a melt diffusion reaction and to form a melt diffused layer. The coating layer may be nickel brazer contg. the ceramics, titanium brazer, or the coated matter of the powders of these alloys or the green compact of the powders. The alloys contg. nitrogen, carbon, boron, zirconium, copper and tungsten are used in the case of use of the nickel alloy and titanium alloy. As a result, the formation of an eutectic alloy and compd. is made by the melt diffusion reaction of the elements contained in the base material with the elements contained in the coating layer and the hard melt diffused layer is formed.
