Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To eliminate the poorness in working efficiency caused by the handling of a phase difference plate and the poorness of display quality by forming a substrate layer having rugged shapes on a substrate and forming a film consisting of a high-polymer liquid crystal thereon. CONSTITUTION:The substrate layer 7 having the rugged shapes is formed on the substrate 1 and the high-polymer liquid crystal layer 8 is formed thereon. Then, the low-polymer liquid crystal group components of the high-polymer liquid crystal constituting the high-polymer liquid crystal layer 8 are oriented along the direction where the recessed parts (or projecting parts) of the rugged shapes of the substrate layer 7 when the high-polymer liquid crystal layer 8 formed on the substrate layer 7 is heated up to an isotropic liquid and is further slowly cooled to a nematic phase. The light passing through the high-polymer liquid crystal layer 8 generates a phase difference when the low-polymer liquid crystal group components of the high-polymer liquid crystal are oriented in one direction in such a manner. This phase difference is controllable by the film thickness of the high-polymer liquid crystal 8.
