Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To provide a production method to form aluminum oxide whiskers having high carrier ability on the surface of a stainless steel alloy containing aluminum in a simple heating furnace without using a heating furnace of special constitution to control the atmosphere in the furnace. CONSTITUTION:A reductive compd. is applied by coating (process 2) on a stainless steel alloy containing aluminum as the base body (process 1). The reductive compd. consists of hydrocarbon compds. or compds. having carboxyl groups, carbonyl groups, or hydroxyl groups as functional groups. Then the coated material is heated to reduce aluminum oxide having a dense structure produced on the surface of the base body (process 3) to produce metal aluminum. Then aluminum oxide whiskers having high carrier ability are formed thereon (process 4) and grown to obtain a catalyst carrier.
