MANUFACTURE OF MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM

PURPOSE: To provide a process for producing a magnetic recording medium of a metallic thin layer type of which the projection of the desirable magnetic direction with respect to a tape surface is aligned to an average recording direction. CONSTITUTION: The magnetic recording medium is produced by forming a vapor jet 7 of a ferromagnetic material from an evaporating device 6 to which this material is supplied in a reduced pressure chamber 1 and depositing the vapor jet by evaporation on polymer band-like substrates guided on a cylindrical drum. At this time, the vapor jet 7 is brought into collision against the substrates 2, 2' at the angle different from 90 deg.. The vapor jet 7 of the ferromagnetic material injected form the evaporating device 6 toward the cylindrical drums 4, 4' in the reduced pressure chamber 1 is brought into contact with the surfaces of two sheets of the band-lie substrates 2, 2' guided in the direction facing each other on two pieces of the separate cylindrical drums 4, 4' at the angle not below 30 deg. and not over 90 deg.. The evaporating device 6 is shifted in the axial line direction of the drums so as to be arranged between two pieces of the cylindrical drums 4, 4'.
