Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To provide a direct injection type diesel engine in which the atomization of fuel promoted by high swirl and an air utilizing rate is improved to reduce smoke in low rotation and while filling efficiency is improved and in particulates are reduced in high rotation. CONSTITUTION:The helical sections 17a, 17b of two intake ports 9a, 9b both as helical ports are spiraled in the opposite directions. Switch valves are respectively provided in intake paths upstream of the respective intake ports 9a, 9b. By opening and closing these switch valves only intake port 9b having strong swirl is used in a high load and low rotation region to intensify the swirl, and only intake port 9a having relatively weak swirl is used in a medium load and medium rotation region to cause flows from both intake ports 9a, 9b to collide with each other in high load and low rotation region for weakening the swirl and forming a tumble flow.
