Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To achieve both the reduction of NOx and the improvement on combusibleness in a direct injection type diesel engine by stratifying a reflux exhaust gas layer biased to the proximity of fuel spray. CONSTITUTION:Two adjacent intake ports 9a, 9b are opened in a cylinder, i.e. the first intake port 9a as a helical port is opened to the proximity of an intake manifold 18 and the second intake port 9b as a tangential port is opened remotely from the intake manifold. An exhaust introducing section 24 and an air heater 25 are provided upstream of the second intake port 9b. In regions except for low rotation and high load, both switch valve 20 and exhaust reflux controlling valve 28 are opened to introduce exhaust gas put on a small diameter swirl flow from the first intake port 9a into the proximity of spray in the center of the cylinder.
