Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE: To reduce operation processes without deteriorating precision of misfire detection, and to improve detection precision in detection of misfires in an internal combustion engine of an automobile. CONSTITUTION: In a method of detecting misfires in an internal combustion engine of an automobile, detection of misfires is stopped between generation of specified conditions and elimination of the specified conditions. In this case, purely logical conditions are discriminated from conditions related to traveling conditions and operating conditions. The purely logical conditions are those to prohibit detection of misfires in principle during a specified number of ignition strokes in specified conditions after a misfire (s3, s4). Examples of the traveling conditions in which detection of misfires is prohibited include traveling on a bumpy road (s7). The operating conditions to disconnect misfire detection include those with rapid fluctuation of a load or a rotation number, or with an extremely large or small rotation number (s9). By disconnecting discrimination of misfires in these conditions, operation processes can be decreased, and misfire detection precision can be improved.
