Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal optical element improved in voltage response and shading characteristics by using an immobilized liquid crystal substance. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal optical element which holds a gelled liquid crystal composition comprising 65wt.% or more of a nonaqueous liquid crystal solvent and 35wt.% or less of a polymer substance between transparent base plates provided with electrodes, and is prepared by polymerizing a polymerizable composition comprising 65wt.% or more nonaqueous liquid crystal solvent and 35wt.% or less polymerizable compound between transparent base plates provided with electrodes.
