Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE: To save a cost and waste in constitution for optically scanning the two-dimensional image part of the surface of a workpiece. CONSTITUTION: The detecting range of a sensor 40 is limited to a point of one row positioned in a horizontal direction with respect to the main sending direction V of the workpiece 10 during sewing. A scanning controller 15-54 repeatedly inquiring the light value of the row at time intervals correspondingly to the regular sending length of the workpiece 10 is arranged. The continuing time of the row inquiry of once is shorter than a former period time interval. A memory device 50 storing the image signal of row inquiries continuing a prescribed number of times (k) is arranged.
