Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE: To introduce appropriate protection measures by detecting instantaneous rotational speed at extremely high resolving degree, thereby identifying erroneous or irregular combustion immediately. CONSTITUTION: A rotational speed signal generating wheel 1 driven an engine is provided with marks 2 at extremely slight angular intervals, and pulses are released in a sensor 3 and sent to a rotational speed evaluating circuit 5. Instantaneous rotational speed is computed based on a time interval between two pulses in a microcomputer 6. Another information such as the operational condition of an air conditioner is supplied to the microcomputer 6. In consideration of the operational parameter, the instantaneous rotational speed is compared with mean rotational speed for each ignition, and if improperly positive acceleration is detected, erroneous combustion error is identified. An ignition order is then compared through a connecting conductor 8 to detect a malfunctioning cylinder. By stopping injection immediately in the cylinder, it is possible to take appropriate protection measures for protecting a catalyst.
