A hydraulic brake system for an automotive vehicle has a master brake cylinder (1) and a power booster (2) connected upstream of the master brake cylinder (1), a pressure fluid pump (45) having a controllable electromotive drive and a pressure accumulator (50) connected to the outlet of the pressure fluid pump (45). The pressure accumulator (50) is connected to the inlet of a hydraulic power booster (2) and the drive motor (44) of the pressure fluid pump (45) is actuatable in dependence upon the pressure in the pressure accumulator (50). On the other hand, the pressure fluid pump (45) can be put into operation by an electric contact (39) at the brake pedal (35). Thus the pressure requirement of the hydraulic power booster (2) will be met by the pressure accumulator (50) at the commencement of braking and particularly in the event of quick depression of the brake pedal (35), until the maximum delivery of the pressure fluid pump (45) is available.
